Cost of Studying and Tuition Fees in the UK

There are two levels of UK tuition fees at publicly funded universities; home student fees (including EU students) and international student fees. For home students, institutions in England and Wales can charge up to a maximum of £9,000 per year for undergraduate degrees; in Northern Ireland up to £3,575 per year; and in Scotland an undergraduate degree is effectively free for students from Scotland or the EU. This is thanks to a subsidy from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). The SAAS also offers a tuition fee loan up to £3,400 for home postgraduate students.

For international students, undergraduate fees for 2013-14 start at £7,450 for lecture-based courses, going up to £36,600 for an undergraduate medical degree at the top of the price range. But a lot of international undergraduate fees are around £10,000 – not much more than those for home students. For postgraduate courses, the majority of international fees for 2013-14 were between £10,000 and £12,000.

Scholarships

There are many financial support options for international students who wish to study on a UK course. Demand for scholarships is always greater than supply. However to maximize your chances of getting an award, apply as early as you can. The British Council administers a number of UK scholarships and funding schemes.

How to Apply for Admission

All universities in the UK accept online application. For undergraduate study, you will need to apply through UCAS. For postgraduate study, you will have to send your application directly to the school. And once they’ve received your application, an offer letter will be sent to you, if you’ve met all the admission requirements.

Admission Requirements

English language proficiency is very important for a student to study in UK.
If English is not a student’s first language, they will be required to successfully complete one of the following;

  • An English preparatory programme
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
  • English language GCSE (grade C or above)

If a student’s first language is not English, most institutions will ask for a qualification in English, or they may ask a student to sit a test.
Each course has minimum entry requirements. Colleges and universities will look at an applicant’s qualifications to see if they meet those standards, but they will also be looking at their overall suitability for the course.

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is the entrance test to be taken by the students applying for a master degree in any field other than management (most universities in the UK do not ask for a GRE score). All applicants applying for a master in management or Business Administration major must submit the result of Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). In addition to these tests, all students whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) or the IELTS.
